Cloud patterns south of Australia - February 26th, 2009

Clouds off the southern coast of Western Australia begin to form a swirled pattern.

The spiral is caused by the circular flow of air in the atmosphere. As clouds form in that swirling air, they take on its shape.

The southwest coastal area visible above the spiral is relatively temperate and was originally heavily forested; it is currently an agricultural region.
