Sand Dunes and Mountains in Kharan Desert Region, Pakistan
The Kharan Desert is a mountainous desert located in Kharan District, in the north-west of Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The desert climate is characterised by hot and very arid conditions.
The desert includes areas of sand dunes (above) and ridges of hills and mountains (below). The ridges sweep in a southwest to northeast direction and are separated by lower valleys, easily observed in this orthorectified image.
The Kharan Desert was also the site of Pakistan’s second nuclear test, which took place in 1998.
