The white and tan areas in the center are the Salinas Grandes, an extensive salt desert located in the center-northwest of continental Argentina. The Salinas occupy the lower parts of a vast, dry endorheic basin

The Salinas Grandes desert has an area of about 8.900 km², but when including the adjacent salt flats, such as Salinas de Ambargasta, San Bernardo and La Antigua, the cumulative area reaches about 30.000 km².
