Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) - November 28th, 2008

Mandalay is the second largest city and the last royal capital of Myanmar (Burma), and is an economic and cultural hub.

The city, located 445 miles (716 km) north of Yangon on the right bank of Irrawaddy River (Ayeyarwady River), has a population of nearly 1 million (2.5 million metropolitan area).

In the image, the populated area of Mandalay is clearly visible in white on the eastern bank of the dark black Irrawaddy.

Inside this bright white area is a large grey square. This is a perfectly square walled enclosure  containing  the Royal Palace or Royal Fort, surrounded by a wide moat. The sides each face a cardinal direction and are nearly two kilometers long.
