Mexico - January 16th, 2011

The Islas Marías (“Mary Islands”) are an archipelago of four islands that belong to Mexico. They are located in the Pacific Ocean, some 100 km (60 miles) off the coast of the state of Nayarit.

To the southeast, the part of the Mexican mainland extending furthest west is Cabo Corrientes, a cape on the Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Jalisco. It marks the southernmost point of the Bahía de Banderas.

Bahía de Banderas (Bay of Flags) is both a bay and a municipality in the Mexican state of Nayarit. The bay, site of the tourist destination Puerto Vallarta, is bounded on the north by Punta Mita and on the south by Cape Corrientes. It straddles the states of Jalisco and Nayarit and is the largest natural bay in Mexico.
