Ergs of the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa31.6N 6.0E
The Sahara Desert sweeps across northern Africa, visible here in parts of Algeria (left), Tunisia (above center) and Libya (right). The desert is composed of several “seas” of sand dunes, known as erg.
Here, the Grand Erg Oriental appears as an expansive area of yellow sand framed by orange sand along its eastern extremity, in the center of the image. The erg is located predominately in Algeria but spreads across the southwestern edge of Tunisia. To the south is Erg Issaouane, with the dunes of Idehan Ubari and Idehan Murzuk to the southeast.
