Bays and Sounds Along Coastal Virginia and North Carolina, USA35.3N 75.8W
Several large bodies of water can be observed in this image of North Carolina (lower two-thirds) and Virginia (upper third), along the east coast of the United States of America.
At the top is part of the Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. It lies off the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by Maryland (the southern tip of which is visible at the upper right) and Virginia.
Moving southward down the coast, one comes to the greyish brown Albermarle Sound, in North Carolina. Below it is the greenish Pamlico Sound, the largest lagoon along the U.S. East Coast. Both sounds are separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Outer Banks, a row of low, sandy barrier islands.
