Bahamas - January 16th, 2011

The Abaco Islands lie in the northern Bahamas and comprise the main islands of Great Abaco and Little Abaco, together with various smaller islands. The Abaco Islands boast important natural areas, especially important coral reef areas, barrier-island terrestrial habitats and large forests of Bahamian Pine.

The light blue color of the water by the islands is due to the Little Bahama Bank, a large underwater limestone platform. The platform drops off suddenly and sharply to the ocean floor. Therefore, the shallow waters above the bank appear light blue in color, while the deeper waters nearby appear dark blue.
