Although clouds dot the skies over large areas of the Amazon Rainforest in this image of northern Brazil, the Amazon River and its extremely wide mouth are clearly visible. Several dark blue lakes can also be observed in the cloudless areas at the bottom center.

The sediments in the river itself and closest to where it spills into the Atlantic Ocean appear dark brown. As they become diluted by the ocean water, they gradually fade to tan and then green. However, the opaque tan color extends far offshore due to the dense sediment load.
