Grand Erg Oriental in Northern Africa

33.0N 8.0E

June 27th, 2011 Category: Deserts, Salt Flats

Tunisia - June 21st, 2011

The Italian island of Sicily is visible in the upper right corner of this image, a relatively short distance from Tunisia, in North Africa.

The northern coast of Algeria (west) and Tunisia (east), along the Mediterranean Sea, shows some green vegetation, while the land to the south is mostly  desert.

Most of the sandy desert visible is part of the Grand Erg Oriental.  Just north of the erg is the Chott el Djerid, a large endorheic salt lake (usually a rather dry salt pan)  in southern Tunisia.
