Algeria and Tunisia - February 11th, 2011

The northern coast of Algeria (left) and Tunisia (right), along the Mediterranean Sea, appears green and vegetated in contrast with the arid, sandy desert to the south.

In the full image, many individual rows of sand dunes can be concerned in the Grand Erg Oriental, particularly in the area of orange-colored sands. Just north of the erg is the Chott el Djerid, a large endorheic salt lake in southern Tunisia. It is the largest salt pan of the Sahara Desert.
