Democratic Republic of the Congo - March 5th, 2010

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of part of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, west of Lake Edward. While the majority of the image shows good photosynthetic activity (green), the land to the north shows lower levels (yellow) and that to the southwest shows higher levels (red).

Some of the vegetation in the areas with a good to high index belongs to the Ituri Rainforest, a rainforest located in the Ituri region. The forest’s name derives from the nearby Ituri River which flows through the rainforest, connecting firstly to the Aruwimi River and finally into the Congo River.

The Ituri Rainforest is about 63,000 square kilometres in area. Its elevation ranges from about 700 m to 1000 m. About one-fifth of the rainforest is made up of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a World Heritage Site.
