Rivers and Hills of Central-Southern India14.0N 76.9E
Several rivers and areas of hills can be observed in this image of central-southern India and Sri Lanka. Between the two countries, sediments and algae are visible in the Palk Strait.
The green area in Karnataka, central India (upper right quadrant) is situated around the Tungabhadra and the Vedavati Rivers, whose courses are dammed for electricity generation and irrigation.
Moving southward towards the tip of the country, several areas of hills appear as dark brown patches across the landscape. One of these is the U-shaped range of Biligirirangan Hills, near the River Kaveri (Cauvery) and the Kabini River.
In between these green and brown areas, on the east coast, is the Pennar River. It can be identified as a tan line flowing across Andhra Pradesh.
Finally, to the southwest of the Biligirirangan Hills, nearing the west cast, are the Cardamom Hills. They are part of the southern Western Ghats mountain range and are dotted by clouds here.
