USA - November 8th, 2010

The Platte River is a river in the Western United States, approximately 310 mi (500 km) long. It is a tributary of the Missouri River. Here, the Platte can be seen flowing west to east across the image as it runs to the Missouri River, flowing from northwest to southeast. The city of Omaha, Nebraska, appears as a grey area near where the Platte flows into the Missouri.

The Platte River is one of the most significant river systems in the watershed of the Missouri, draining a large portion of the central Great Plains in Nebraska and the eastern Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming.

Upon opening the full image, hundreds of square and rectangular fields can be seen across the Great Plains of Nebraska. These tan fields become fewer in number as one moves south into Kansas (the lower half of the image, dotted with lakes and redder in color).
