Ottawa is the capital of Canada and the country’s fourth largest municipality, with a metropolitan population estimated at 1,190,982.
It is located in the Ottawa Valley in the eastern portion of the province of Ontario. The Laurentian Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, lie to the north.
Ottawa lies on the banks of the Ottawa River, a major waterway that forms the boundary between Ontario and Quebec. High reflection of the sun causes it to appear bright white in the radar image.
Around the main urban area is an extensive greenbelt, administered by the National Capital Commission, for conservation and leisure, and comprising mostly forest, farmland and marshland.
