Mali - October 19th, 2010

The large green area in the lower left quadrant is the Niger Inland Delta (also known as the Inner Niger and Macina Inland Delta), in central Mali.

The delta is part of a large area of lakes and floodplains in the country’s semi-desert Sahel area, which is situated just south of the Sahara Desert. The sands of the Sahara can be noted across the top part of the image.

The Niger River can be seen north of the green oasis of the delta. It is the principal river of western Africa, extending about 4,180 km (2,600 mi). From its source in the Guinea Highlands of southeastern Guinea, it runs in a crescent through Mali, Niger, on the border with Benin and then through Nigeria.
