Mahakam River, Borneo, Indonesia
This radar (ASAR) image gives us an interesting view of eastern Borneo, Indonesia. We can see the mouth of the Mahakam River, which flows 980 km from the highlands of Borneo to the Makassar Strait. The latter connects the Celebes Sea (north) to the Java Sea (south).
The bright white area along the north bank of the river is the city of Samarinda, the provincial capital of East Kalimantan, about 48 km (30 mi) from the river mouth.
Closer to the mouth, we can see that the land is more fertile and used for agriculture.
