The Orange River appears as a green line curving its way through the middle section of this image of South Africa. Here it can be observed flowing westwards through the arid wilderness of the southern Kalahari region and Namaqualand in the Northern Cape Province.

To the North of the river is the Kalahari Desert, a large arid to semi-arid sandy area extending 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa, as semi-desert, with huge tracts of excellent grazing after good rains.
