Dhaka on Banks of Buriganga River, Bangladesh

April 7th, 2012 Category: Rivers

Bangladesh - April 6th, 2012

This APM image shows the city of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, appearing here as a yellowish area. The city is located in central Bangladesh on the eastern banks of the Buriganga River. The city lies on the lower reaches of the Ganges Delta and covers a total area of 360 square kilometres (140 sq mi). Tropical vegetation and moist soils characterize the land, which is flat and close to sea level. This leaves Dhaka susceptible to flooding during the monsoon seasons owing to heavy rainfall and cyclones (click here to see images of cyclones near Bangladesh).
