Phytoplankton - June 28th, 2010

A bright blue and green phytoplankton bloom can be seen off the coast of the United Kingdom. The bloom appears most concentrated near the coast Northern England and Scotland, in the upper left quadrant. The different green and blue hues may be caused by the presence of different species of phytoplankton.

Another, fainter patch of phytoplankton is visible to the right. This lighter color may be because the bloom has either begun more recently or started to diminish, or because changes in ocean currents are diffusing the phytoplankton.
