Canada - July 4th, 2011

A bright blue phytoplankton bloom colors the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the island of Newfoundland, Canada.

Such blooms are common in this area in the spring and summer, when abundant sunlight encourages photosynthesis and relatively calm seas allow more of the tiny organisms to gather.
