Phytoplankton Bloom Still Faintly Visible Near Canadian Shores

The light blue phytoplankton bloom that has been hanging in the waters off the coast of the island of Newfoundland, Canada, over the last two months (click here for more on phytoplankton blooms near Canada) is still faintly visible.

Phytoplankton thrive at high latitudes, especially during the spring and summer months when abundant sunlight incites photosynthesis. The relatively calm seas are another factor that permits the microscopic organisms to group together, thus becoming visible as extensive blooms.
