Phytoplankton Bloom in Black Sea and Sun Glint on Mediterranean Sea

39.7N 34.9E

June 29th, 2012 Category: Phytoplankton

Black Sea – June 26th, 2012

The big contrast in color between the Black Sea (above) and the Mediterranean Sea (below) is due to an intense phytoplankton bloom in the former and some sun glint reflecting off the latter. The phytoplankton bloom is spread throughout most of the 436,400 km2 (168,500 sq. mi) surface area of the Black Sea. Phytoplankton have been flourishing in the Black Sea since mid-May (click here for previous images).
