Phytoplankton in Barents Sea - September 7th, 2011

Partially visible amongst the clouds in the upper left quadrant is a phytoplankton bloom in the Barents Sea. The bloom began over a month ago off the northern coast of Norway, and has spread eastward to the seas near Russia.

Visible near the center of the image is the Kanin Peninsula, located in Russia’s Nenets Autonomous Okrug. It is bordered by the Barents Sea to the north and east, and by the White Sea to the west.
