Phytoplankton Bloom in Barents Sea Fading72.2N 18.5E
The green and blue phytoplankton bloom that has been coloring the Barents Sea off the coast of Norway over the last month appears to be gradually fading. (Click here for previous images).
Phytoplankton blooms are often present in August in the area in this image, because several ocean current systems merge here, mixing currents and causing nutrients to rise from the depths and spread throughout the area. The microscopic organisms feed off these nutrients and reproduce in great numbers, thus becoming collectively visible to the naked eye.
