Russia – August 8th, 2012

Glowing through the partial cloud cover is an intense phytoplankton bloom in the Barents Sea (click here for previous images), off the coast of Russia, whose terrain is partially visible at the bottom right. The seemingly milky texture of the teal and turquoise bloom is due to the light reflecting off certain species of phytoplankton that are flourishing there.
