July 24th, 2012 Category: Phytoplankton

Canada – July 23rd, 2012

An electric blue spring phytoplankton bloom lights up the waters southeasts of the coast of Newfoundland in the lower right quadrant of this image. Phytoplankton blooms are common in the North Atlantic, particularly in the spring and summer. Such blooms are triggered by the greater availability of light during the longer spring and summer days, as well as nutrients mixing into surface water as it warms.
