Fires northwest of the mouth of the Nelson River, in Manitoba, Canada, near the shores of the Hudson Bay, continue to release thick plumes of smoke. Here, winds are carrying the smoke principally in a southwesterly direction.

Tropical Storm Rumbia (06W) formed over the Philippines late Friday and could begin affecting Taiwan (upper left) on Sunday, bringing showers to the eastern and southern parts of the country.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, Tropical Storm Rumbia was centered 1,240 kilometers south-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 26 km per hour. Rumbia is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts reaching 90 kph, the bureau said Saturday morning.

There is little chance the storm will directly hit Taiwan, forecasters said, but they warned that the unstable weather it causes could last until July 2 islandwide. The sixth tropical storm to be formed in the 2013 Pacific typhoon season, Rumbia means palm tree in Malaysian.

The cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou (above) and Hong Kong (lower left) stand out along the shoreline of China, as do populated areas along the west coast of the island of Taiwan. Shanghai is China’s most populous city, situated on the eastern coast of the country, a port on the estuary of the Yangtze River.

Hong Kong is a former British dependency on the southeastern coast of China. The area comprises Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, and the New Territories, additional areas of the mainland. Hong Kong has become one of the world’s major financial and manufacturing centers.

Fires can be seen in several locations near the Hudson Bay, Canada, in this image. Several plumes are visible in Quebec, east of James Bay, the southern extension of the Hudson Bay (lower right quadrant). The smoke from these fires is blowing towards the west. Another cluster of fires is visible in Manitoba, near the mouth of the Nelson River where it spills into Hudson Bay (center left). The plumes of smoke from those fires blows towards the southwest.
