Fires west of Russia’s Bratsk Reservoir (right edge) release plumes of smoke towards the west-northwest.

At the time this image was taken, Russia was reporting 421 wildfires burning in forests and peat bogs, covering an area of 116,098 hectares (450 sq miles) (click here for previous articles).

However, the area on fire is twice the size of that for the same period last year. Drought, fires and smog left dozens dead and ruined crops in 2010, and there are fears of a repeat disaster.

The smoke hanging in the air over Siberia is caused by wildfires in central Russia (click here for previous articles).

The fires have been mainly confined to remote parts of Siberia and the Urals, with no blazes reported near Moscow and other central Russian cities.

The image offers another view of the fires burning near the frozen Zeyskoye (Zeya) Reservoir, in eastern Russia’s Amur Oblast. The smoke blows to the northwest, towards the lake.

Russia is currently being afflicted by wildfires both in its far eastern and central areas (click here for previous articles). The fires are thought to be caused by human activity.

While Eosnap has recently observed fires burning in central Russia (click here for articles), this image focuses on fires burning in eastern Russia, near the border with China.

Here, a cluster of fires can be seen south of the Zeya (or Zeyskoye) Reservoir, in Amur Oblast. The thick plumes of smoke released by the blazes are blowing towards the northwest.
