Clouds hang over the Mediterranean Sea, partially obscuring the view of the Nile Delta, in northern Egypt. The delta valley further to the south is visible, however, appearing as a bright green triangle of land. The city of Cairo can be observed near the tip of the triangular region.

The land along the banks of the Nile River is also green and vegetated, in contrast with the desert that covers most of the rest of the image. Another vegetated area of land is the Fayum Oasis, west of the river. Lake Moeris can be observed along the northern border of the oasis.

The northern section of the Nile River flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along those parts of the Nile Valley north of Aswan. The valley can be observed here, appearing as a thick green band on either side of the river as it flows through the Sahara Desert.

The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea, which is partially visible at the top of the full image. The other green area at the top of the thumbnail image is the Faiyum Oasis, a depression or basin in the desert immediately to the west of the Nile south of Cairo. The extent of the basin area is estimated at between 490 mi² (1,270 km²) and 656 mi² (1700 km²). The basin floor comprises fields watered by a channel of the Nile, the Bahr Yussef, as it drains into a desert depression to the west of the Nile Valley.

Stretching over an area of 3,400 miles² (8,800 km²) between the While Nile (left) and Blue Nile (right) Rivers is the irrigated land of the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world. The confluence of the two rivers at the city of Khartoum can be observed near the top edge.

The Gezira (which means “island”) is particularly suited to irrigation because the soil slopes away from the Blue Nile and water therefore naturally runs through the irrigation canals by gravity. This network of canals and ditches is 2,700 miles (4,300 km) long. Upon opening the full image, many individual fields can be observed.

Bayuda Desert and Volcanic Field Near Nile River in Sudan

This orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image shows the Nile River bending around the Bayuda Desert. The desert is located north of modern Khartoum, Sudan, west of Kadabas, and south of the Nubian Desert, together making up part of the Sahara’s eastern flank. Within the desert the Bayuda Volcanic Field can be found, appearing here as a lighter grey area.

Visible along the Nile River in the upper left quadrant is the reservoir created by the Merowe Dam. Also known as Merowe High Dam, Merowe Multi-Purpose Hydro Project or Hamdab Dam, it is a large dam near Merowe Town in northern Sudan, about 350 km north of the capital Khartoum. It is situated on the river Nile, close to the 4th Cataract where the river divides into multiple smaller branches with large islands in between. The main purpose for building the dam was the generation of electricity.

Situated near the top edge of this orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image is Khartoum, the capital and largest city of Sudan and of Khartoum State. It is located at the confluence of the White Nile flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as “al-Mogran”.

Visible just southeast of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers at Khartoum is the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world. It distributes water from the Blue Nile through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the the two rivers. The Gezira is particularly suited to irrigation because the soil slopes away from the Blue Nile and water therefore naturally runs through the irrigation canals by gravity.
