Taklamakan Desert Surrounded by Snowcapped Mountains, China38.9N 82.5E
The huge expanse of the Taklamakan Desert covers much of this image of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.
Despite its large size, it is only the world’s 17th largest desert. It is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains to the south, and the desert Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan to the west and north. Snow is visible on the peaks of these ranges.
