The dark line along the northern coast of Somalia, parallel to the Gulf of Aden, marks the crests of the Surud Mountain Range in the country’s Maakhir region. The highest peak in Somalia, Mount Shimbiris, at 2450 meters above sea level, is found in this range.

Somalia has the longest coastline on the African continent. Its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains, and highlands. Major climatic factors are a year-round hot climate, seasonal monsoon winds, and irregular rainfall. Mean daily maximum temperatures range from 30 °C (86 °F) to 40 °C (104 °F), except at higher elevations and along the east coast. Mean daily minimums usually vary from about 15 °C (59 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F).
