Sierra Madre Oriental Range and Gulf Coastal Plain, Mexico

24.0N 99.7W

August 24th, 2010 Category: Mountains

Mexico - July 22nd, 2010

The mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental range cross this APM image of Mexico. The range is approximately 1000 kilometers long, and runs parallel to the eastern coast in the northeastern part of the country.

Lying east of the range is Mexico’s Gulf Coastal Plain, between the mountains and the Gulf of Mexico coast. Part of the plain can be observed in the upper right part of the full image.

This long range of tall mountains is noted for its abundant biodiversity and large number of endemic species of plants and wildlife, from the dry north to the wetter south. However, original habitats have been severely reduced by clearance for livestock grazing and logging over hundreds of years.
