Oman - October 13th, 2010

This image stretches across Oman, from the southern parts of the Rub’ al Khali sandy desert (above), to the vast gravel desert plain covering most of the central part of the country, to the mountain ranges along the southeast coast.

Upon opening the full image, many individual orange-colored rows of sand dunes can be observed in the Rub’ al Khali. Towards the center, dry riverbeds create branched tan lines across the gravel desert.

Finally, to the south lies the Dhofar region, whose mountainous area covers 99,300 km2 (38,300 sq mi).  The mountains and surrounding countryside are lush and green during the monsoon period, in contrast with the arid desert covering most of Oman.
