Mountains and Floodplains in Tanzania’s Rukwa Region
This APM image shows a ridge of mountains in western Tanzania’s Rukwa Region between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa. Two of the highest peaks in the ridge are Yamba, at over 2000 meters, and Kifuma, at over 1800 meters.
Much of the area to the north of the ridge is part of the Katavi National Park. It is approximately 4,471 square kilometers (1,727 square miles) in area, which makes it the third largest National Park in Tanzania. The park encompasses the Katuma River and the seasonal Lake Katavi and Lake Chada floodplains.
