Hajjar Mountains Parallel to Gulf of Oman Coast

23.6N 57.2E

December 1st, 2011 Category: Mountains

Saudi Arabia - November 22nd, 2011

Visible parallel to the coast in the lower half of the image are the dark brown Hajjar Mountains (Arabic for stone mountains), in northeastern Oman and the eastern United Arab Emirates. They constitute the highest mountain range in the eastern Arabian peninsula.

The mountains separate the low coastal plain of Oman from the high desert plateau, and lie 50–100 km inland from the Gulf of Oman coast. Clouds dot the skies over this coastal plain between the mountains and the gulf, and hang over the Gulf of Oman as well, but do not reach northward over Iran.
