Dunes and Mountains of the Sahara Desert28.2N 6.0E
This image stretches across the arid Sahara Desert. In the full image, it reaches from southern Tunisia, across Algeria, and over much of Niger (from north to south).
The upper part of the full image contains the driest areas, particularly the “sea” of sand dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, (appearing smooth and yellow to orange in color, near the top). The smooth appearance is deceiving, however, as many of the dunes are extremely high.
The Grand Erg Oriental covers an area some 600 km. wide by 200 km. north to south, making it the largest erg in Algeria. The erg’s northeastern corner spills over into neighbouring Tunisia.
Moving southward, one crosses over the mountains of the Tassili n’Ajjer (dark brown), the Ahaggar Range (lighter brown, south of the former) and finally the Aïr Mountains (further south, along the right edge of the full image). Towards the very bottom of the full image, the terrain begins to appear slightly green in color and less arid.
