Aïr Mountains in Niger and Dust Over Sahel18.2N 7.9E
The area of dark brown circles in the upper right quadrant of this image of the Sahara Desert is the Aïr Mountains, located in northern Niger. Lying in the midst of desert north of the 17th parallel, the Aïr plateau, with an average altitude between 500 and 900 m, forms an island of Sahel climate which supports a wide variety of life.
The desert gives way to less arid sahel to the south. The Sahel is the ecoclimatic and biogeographic zone of transition between the Sahara desert in the North and the Sudanian Savannas in the south. Some dust can be seen blowing in the air over this region.
