Turkey, Between the Black and Mediterranean Seas

40.0N 37.1E

October 10th, 2010 Category: Lakes, Mountains

Turkey - August 27th, 2010

This image focuses on Turkey and the Black Sea, although parts of the Ukraine (upper left), Russia (upper right), Georgia (center right, although mostly cloud-covered) and Syria (bottom right) can also be seen. The full image stretches southward across the Mediterranean Sea and the island nation of Cyprus.

The coastal regions of Turkey appear more fertile than the rest of the country, with particularly green areas along the Pontic Range, parallel to the Black Sea.

Regarding the bodes of water, the Black and Mediterranean Seas appear dark blue, while the waters of the Sea of Azov (top center) are tinted green with sediments. The Strait of Kerch separates the Sea of Azov from the rest of the Black Sea, concentrating the sediments within the former.
