Spring Thaw Around Lake Baikal, Russia
The land around Lake Baikal, in Russian Siberia, gradually thaws out as warmer weather arrives. Brown land which was blanketed by snow until a short while ago can now be seen (click here for a previous winter article).
The lake itself, however, is still frozen, and snow still dusts the land to the northwest and covers the peaks of the nearby mountains.
Lake Baikal, which lies in a rift valley, is completely surrounded by mountains. The Baikal Mountains on the north shore and the taiga are technically protected as a national park.
