Uruguay has an area of 68,679 sq mi (177,879 sq km) and a population (2009 est.) of about 3,361,000. Its capital is Montevideo. It is the only South American country lying entirely outside the tropics.
The country’s topography consists mainly of low plateaus and low hilly regions. The principal waterway is the Negro River; the Uruguay River forms the border with Argentina. Here, part of Laguna Merín (Spanish), also known as Lagoa Mirim (Portuguese), is visible at the top edge. The lagoon is shared by Uruguay and Brazil.
