Sierra Madre Occidental, Chihuahua, Mexico - February 3rd, 2009

Part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in the Mexican state of Chihuahua is visible on the bottom left.

These mountains are located in western Mexico and the extreme southwest of the United States. They extend 1500 km southeast from Arizona, through eastern Sonora, then western Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes to Guanajuato, where they join with the Sierra Madre Oriental in central Mexico.

Several green, algae-covered lakes are also seen here. The largest one, to the North, is near the town of Boquilla. The second-largest is by the town of Guadelupe.
