The butterfly-shaped green area in the upper half of this image is Lake Chad. It is surrounded by Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria on the edge of the Sahara Desert.
Lake other important lake systems in the world, such as the Aral Sea, Lake Chad is shrinking. In the 1960s it was the fourth largest lake by surface area in Africa, at over 26,000 km². By 2000, however, its surface area had decreased to less than 1,500 km².
