Sediments turn the northern part of the Caspian Sea green and teal in color. Many enter from the Volga River Delta, partially visible below the clouds in the upper left corner. The delta appears tan in color in this winter image, in contrast with its usually bright green color in summer.

Below the lakebed is Kashagan Field, an oil field located in Kazakhstan in the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The field was discovered in 2000. It is situated is offshore in a harsh environment, where sea ice is present in the winter and temperatures from -35 °C (-31 °F) to 40 °C (104 °F) can be encountered.
