Sebkha of Oran and Coastal Algeria

May 19th, 2011 Category: Deserts, Lakes

Algeria - May 4th, 2011

Coastal Algeria appears green and fertile in comparison to the arid Sahara Desert to the south. Visible across the Mediterranean Sea, in the upper left corner, is a small area of Spain.

Upon opening the full image, the Great Sebkha or Sebkha of Oran can be seen by the coast near the left edge of the image. It is a salt lake in a depression in Algeria distant 12 km from the Mediterranean Sea and 15 km from the city of Oran, with a size of approximately 44km by 12km (52800 Ha).

Here, its color mostly blends in with the surrounding terrain, although its texture does not. A green streak of algae stretches from the center towards the eastern end.
