Caspian Sea - December 30th, 2011

Sarygamysh Lake is situated mostly in north central Turkmenistan, although the northwest quarter of the lake belongs to the country of Uzbekistan. It is located approximately midway between the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea. Part of the Caspian Sea can be seen at the far left edge of the full image, by Karabogas Bay.

Karabogas Bay is a shallow inundated depression in the northwestern corner of Turkmenistan that forms a lagoon of the Caspian Sea with a surface area of about 18000 km2. It is separated from the Caspian, which lies immediately to the west, by a narrow, rocky ridge with a very narrow opening in the rock through which the Caspian waters flow.
