Moving inland from the coast of Turkey along the Black Sea, one comes to a lake shaped like a thick navy blue ribbon. This artificial reservoir was created by the Altınkaya Dam, a rock-fill dam for irrigation and hydro power purposes.

It is located on the River Kızılırmak, 23 km south of Bafra and 35 km west of Samsun in northern Turkey. The dam volume is 15,920,000 m³, with a storage volume of 5,763 billion m³ in a reservoir area at a normal water surface elevation of 118.31 km².
