The city is situated by the shores of the freshwater Lagoa dos Patos, the second largest lagoon in Latin America and the biggest in Brazil. It is 174 miles (280 km) long, has a maximum width of 44 miles (70 km), and a total area of 3,803 sq. mi. (9,850 km).
Porto Alegre, appearing as a bright white area near the northern shores of the lagoon, is the tenth most populous municipality in Brazil and the capital city of the country’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. The city lies on the eastern bank of the Guaíba River estuary, where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos.
