Turkey - December 6th, 2010

Two lakes stand out in this orthorectified image of part of Turkey near the coast of the Sea of Marmara (top). To the right is Lake Uluabat (also known as Lake Apolyont), and partially visible at the left edge is Lake Kuş (also known as Lake Manyas).

The former is a freshwater lake in the vicinity of Bursa. It is a large body of water, covering an area of between 135 and 160 km², depending on the water level, but it is shallow, only 3 m deep at its deepest point. Lake Kuş, located in the Balıkesir region, is also a shallow freshwater lake with an average depth of 3 m.
