Lake Tharthar Between Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Iraq34.0N 43.1E
The teardrop-shaped body of water by the top center of this image is Lake Tharthar, in Iraq. The lake is situated 120 kilometers north of Baghdad between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. It is the largest lake in the country.
While the land southeast of the lake, approaching the Persian Gulf, appears flat and fertile, the terrain to the north is mountainous and the land to the south is arid desert. The border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia is located near the change in color from tan to orange sand.
